Training

Combat training is held weekly. New people are always welcome, even if you just want to have a look.

Beginners are trained in Single Sword and Quaterstaff, to develop skills and get used to combat. Gradings are held periodically to ensure saftey and proficency with weapons before you move on to more advanced weapons.

1st Grade: (Safety Grade)

The purpose of 1st Grade is to teach safety and control in combat, and to get used to fighting with and against weapons.

Weapons Taught:

2nd Grade: (Combat Grade)

The purpose of second grade is to train you to a point where you are an effective fighter, and can work well as part of a group.

3rd Grade and Above: (Senior Grades)

Saftey

For safety reasons we have a minimum kit requirement which you need before you can participate in combat. Generally we have some spare gloves and we have several club helms that you can use until you get your own. Club helms are unpadded so you will need something soft for your head. We have rules in place for saftey, these include illegal target areas (joints etc.) and weapon saftey and equipment requirements.

Kit

Minimum kit requirements:

1. Gauntlets. (Welding gloves or leather gardening gloves can be used but ensure the cuffs extend enough to cover your wrists).

2. Steel Helmet with Arming cap or padding

3. Groin protection.

A gambeson or additional armour or protection is also recomended.

Garb:

Like every other medieval club we aim for as much historical accuracy as possible within the modern world. We realise that obtaining a full medieval combat kit can be very expensive, therefore we don't expect people to be turning up on day one in full medieval garb.

It is encouraged that members train in Period Clothes where appropriate.

Armour & Period:

Primary Armour Should generally be chosen from a 50 year timespan within the club period of 1200AD to 1400AD.

Armour and weapons when representing the club, particually when participating in inter-club combat and public combat displays, should adhere to the above rule. When wearing the club coat of arms (eg. a club surcoat) it is essential that kit be in club period.

Members may choose to obtain and use kit that is not in club period but this may not be used when representing the club. Members are highly encouraged to obtain a set of period kit 1st so that they can fully participate in club activities. Members coming from other clubs with existing kit are thus encouraged to obtain kit that is in club period but may still use their existing kit under the above terms.

Armour expressly for Safely:

An individual may however wear items that are for the expressed purpose of protection at any time, regardless of their historical accuracy. This is specifically includes protective eyewear, mouth guards and groin protection.

Members are encouraged to attempt to research the safety item in question and devise a historical looking equivalent if possible or appropriate.
